Literature Text

You looked out the widow up to the starry sky, patterned by drifting clouds. You didn't really remember why you were awake at 3 in the morning. Maybe a dream or the tapping that seemed to echo around your quiet room. Tucking a (h/c) lock of hair behind an ear you sighed and walked away from the window. You were too tired to question everything at this hour; though, during the day thoughts and doubts plagued your mind. Sliding back into the now cold bed you curled up trying to retain the warmth that radiated off you. Everything was so dull; the world suddenly lost its color this year. High school felt submerged underwater and you were experiencing life through a pane of glass.

Sighing once more you closed your eyes.
As soon as you did memories rushed at you. Almost like bullets, they pierced your subconscious. Sitting upright, still tired but even more alert, you gave up on sleep. What was the point? Nothing stopped the memories. You hop off the bed and sit on the floor with your knees to your chest. Absentmindedly you brush your fingers across the (c) carpet. You thought back to when you were a kid and everything was so exciting. When life was exhilarating and new. Even fairy tales seemed real enough. Your favorite one was Peter Pan. You loved the thought of sword fighting pirates, tempting mermaids, companions who would never leave your side, and flying above the world.

You always wished on any star you could see in the sky to take you to Neverland. It didn't happen, obviously, but you were so heartbroken. You wanted to be the first Lost Girl to defeat Peter Pan in a sword fight, to befriend Tinker Bell, and show the Lost Boys that their family is already with them. Knowing the story by heart and being so discouraged with nights of failed wishes you gave up. Looking back to the window at the endless night sky you felt a little hopelessness. What if life stayed this way forever? Would it always be through glass? Am I too old to go to Neverland?

With a small whisper containing the small hope you had you breathed, "I believe."

After a minute of nothing you let your (h/c) head drop to your knees once again disappointed. What were you doing? It's a fairy tale. Not real. It never would be no matter how much you believed. A gush of cold air wafted over you, sending a wave of goosebumps up your skin. You yawned while shivering off the cold air. Would a nightmare be so bad as long as you're asleep? You decided a little forced sleep wouldn't be so horrible. Hauling yourself up you were on your feet in time to see your window shoved open and a black mist to seep into your room.

You were shocked into place as the mist materialized into a resemblance of a silhouette. Your t-shirt and shorts weren't enough to shield yourself from the uninvited cold flowing into the room. Shivering you took a step back from the dark figure. What did it want? What the HELL even is it? Why was it here? Your eyes shifted all around your room taking in all the useless junk sprawled over the desks and dressers. Nothing good enough to use as a weapon or a shield. Dammit, you wanted change but death wasn't an option. It leaned forward with a ghostly hand reaching for you. You felt your breath getting faster as the panic rose within you. Hyperventilating you began losing oxygen as it grabbed your wrist.

Pulling you toward the open window you skidded your socks against the carpet. The fabric was too soft to create much friction so you slid tethered to mist. You began losing your balance, reaching the window it slipped out easily floating. At the last moment you tripped over your own feet, the momentum propelling you forward into the window. Slamming your head into the window pane you began to black out. The shadow continued to carry you out into the night air. Feeling weightless you faded into unconsciousness the world getting smaller below you.
